She put on her favourite yellow dress and tucked Teddy carefully into her backpack.

“Teddy will help,” Mama said, squeezing her hand. “And so will I, all the way to the door.”

The school doors looked very tall. Sofia squeezed Teddy and took one tiny step. Then another.

Inside, there were colourful hooks for coats, a reading corner, and a very smiley teacher named Miss Pip.

“Welcome, Sofia,” said Miss Pip. “We saved your favourite seat — right next to the window.”

A girl with bouncy curls waved her over. “I'm Ruby. Want to paint with me?” Sofia nodded shyly.

They painted a rainbow, a cat, and a slightly lopsided sun. Sofia got a dab of blue right on her nose.

At snack time, Ruby shared her apple slices. At story time, they sat criss-cross-applesauce together.

When Mama came back, Sofia ran out grinning. “Mama! I made a friend AND a rainbow!”
