Rain or Shine

For every family who finds joy when plans change.

Every Friday night, Mom and I choose an adventure. We close our eyes, reach into our Adventure Jar, and pull one out. "Whatever it is," I grin, "rain or shine, we're going to have a good time!"

Today we're rollerblading! Just as we reach the park… drip, drop, rain. Mom looks at the sky and smiles. "We've got rain jackets." Splish, splash — we skate through puddles, laughing all the way.

Today we're going to the beach! The sand feels warm between our toes. But the waves are HUGE — too big for swimming. Mom points down the shore. "I wonder what treasures the tide left behind."

Page 4

We discover seashells and smooth sea glass sparkling like tiny jewels. We build a castle to keep our treasures safe. The beach gave us a different adventure.

Today we're going to the zoo! Then the rain begins. Families hurry toward the exit — not us. We pull on colorful ponchos. The elephants splash, the otters zoom, the frogs sing louder than ever.

Page 6

Today we're flying our kite! But the wind doesn't blow, not even a little. Mom lies down in the grass. "I wonder what that cloud looks like." "A dragon!" "A turtle wearing boots!"

Page 7

Today we're getting ice cream! But a sign on the door says CLOSED. I look down. Mom gently squeezes my hand. "I have an even sweeter idea."

Page 8

Back home, we build the biggest banana splits we can imagine. Mine has extra sprinkles. Mom's has extra whipped cream. Homemade tastes pretty wonderful.

Today we're going fishing! We cast our lines. We wait. Not a single nibble. "Would you rather have ears like an elephant… or arms like an octopus?" We laugh so hard our bellies wiggle — then TUG!

Page 10

Today we're flying somewhere new! Then… "Our flight has been delayed." Mom smiles. "Looks like our adventure starts right here." We watch airplanes soar and wave goodbye to every one.

The next Saturday morning I run to the window. Raindrops tap the glass. I pull on my rain boots, take Mom's hand, and together we open the front door. "Rain or shine…" Mom smiles. I finish, "…we're going to have a good time!"
