When the sky turned the colour of plums, Mia's mama tucked her in and kissed her on the nose.

Page 2

But Mia wasn't sleepy. Not even a tiny, tiny bit. She wriggled her toes and waited.

Tap. Tap. Tap. Something was knocking softly at her window. Mia tiptoed across the rug to look.

It was the Moon — round and yawning and a little bit shy. “Mia,” he whispered, “I can't fall asleep either.”

“Climb on,” said Mia, opening the window wide. The Moon floated in like a great silver balloon.

Together they drifted past chimneys and treetops, where owls bowed and bats waved hello.

They sailed over a river that sparkled like spilled stars, and a meadow full of dreaming sheep.

“What helps you sleep at home?” Mia asked. The Moon thought hard. “A song,” he said. “A small, soft song.”

So Mia hummed the lullaby her mama always hummed, and the Moon's eyes grew heavy and warm.

He carried her gently home, kissed the window goodnight, and floated back up to his cloud.

Mia curled under her blanket with a sleepy little smile. “Goodnight, Moon,” she whispered. And this time — she was ready.
